What is Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®?

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence is a playful way to unite all genders to take action against gender based violence and sexual assault.  All participants are sponsored to walk one-mile in high-heeled shoes!  The course will be handicap accessible and lead walkers through the Claremont Colleges.

Not only is this event committed to raising awareness, we are also committed to supporting the efforts of a local non-profit with a similar mission: Project Sister Family Services.  Dedicated to reducing the trauma and risk of sexual assault through prevention education and crisis intervention services, Project Sister Family Services is the only state-designated provider of sexual assault crisis prevention services in eastern Los Angeles and western San Bernardino.  Over the years, Project Sister Family Services has filled a dire need and selflessly supported our community, now it’s time for us to give back.

Sound exciting?  Let’s learn more...

Who can participate?

Everyone While traditionally Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is a walk where women sponsor men, we highly encourage anyone who wants to walk to do so!  The minimum registration fee is only $10. Even if you can't register, please consider donating- every little bit helps!

How can I get involved?

There are a couple different ways:

Participate.  Grab your high-heels and join while we walk the walk.  As soon as we get our registration site up and running, we will let you know!  We will be accepting donations online through active.com.  All walkers are encouraged to rock high-heeled shoes!

Sponsor.  Help someone slip into their first, or 100th, pair of heels!  Sponsor a friend, father, son, grandfather, teacher, etc.  Having trouble committing to the full minimum sponsorship?  Grab 19 other friends and you’ll only have to pitch in a dollar!  If you sponsor a participant, make sure you try to be here to watch them in action!

Support.  Haven’t registered?  Haven’t sponsored?  We still need your help!  This walk is a form of performance activism, so come watch the show!  Cheer on our participants as they strut down the road!

Volunteer. Looking to get involved?  We need folks to register participants, grill up some lunch, teach participants how to walk in heels, pass out water, etc.  If you’re interested in becoming involved in preparations or volunteering on the day of the walk, please contact us at: claremontWAM@gmail.com

Why should I get involved?

The statistics, provided by RAINN, are astronomical:

…Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted.

…1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime.

…80% of sexual assault and rape victims are under the age of 30.

…More than 50% of all rape/sexual assault incidents were reported by victims to have occurred within 1 mile of their home or at their home.

Yes, these numbers are astronomical, but look around.  These aren’t just numbers.  These statistics represent faces, real stories, your friends, your family.  This is not just a women’s issue.  This is not just a men’s issue.  Rape and sexual assault are issues that affect us all.
